Guns Don’t Kill People, Guns Attract People Who Kill People. With Guns. Or Something.

A recent $639,586 study regarding gun violence funded by the National Institute of Health (that would be you) and conducted by Dr. Charles C. Branas of the Pennsylvania School of Medicine, made a startling discovery:

We should be giving more money to Dr. Charles C. Branas to conduct additional studies into gun violence.

Or, as Dr. Branas put it:

“Learning how to live healthy lives alongside guns will require more studies such as this one. This study should be the beginning of a better investment in gun injury research through various government and private agencies.”

Also, that possessing a gun, rather than making you safer, makes it 4.5 times more likely you’ll get shot in an assault.

The study’s methodology involved examining people who got shot to see if they had a gun, and comparing those results to people who did not have a gun, and did not happen to get shot.

Some question the legitimacy of this kind of “correlation-and-effect” approach to scientific inquiry by pointing out that people who choose to have a gun may be doing so due to higher expectations of being shot in the first place, making it a self-selecting group, however they betray a fatal flaw in their argument:

Charles C. Branas is a doctor.

In fact, using a similar methodology, we here at Planet Moron found disturbing evidence that people who possess parkas are far more likely to be victims of cold outdoor temperatures than those who do not.

The lesson?

We need to “rethink our possession of parkas.”

The study was also careful to include only those people who had actually been shot, as opposed to people who, while in possession of a firearm, were able to successfully fend off an attacker, whether through force or intimidation, without being so injured.

Fascinated by this novel, University-of-Pennsylvania-doctor-approved approach to research, we here at Planet Moron made another startling discovery:

Helmets cause football injuries.

Looking only at football players who had been injured, we found that nearly 100% of them were wearing helmets. (Note: That may include, like the Branas study, players who left their helmet in the car.)

Apparently, the helmets created a “false sense of security.” So to all you football players out there, if you value your safety, for God’s sake, take off that damn helmet before you get hurt.

Despite the fact that those conducting the study were doctors from the University of Pennsylvania, some critics point out that most gunshot victims are typically found (pdf) to have long arrest records themselves suggesting that the vast majority of gun violence is conducted within the criminal community, having little to do with common citizens who possess firearms for self-defense.

But then, these critics are not 100% unbiased doctors from the University of Pennsylvania who happen to be part of an organization that coincidentally produces studies that support greater gun control.

Your confidence in the study should be further enhanced by the fact that it involved a total of 677 gun shot victims, 41 of whom had a gun. (Surely a spreadsheet of some kind was involved.)

What obvious conclusion are we to draw from a “first-of-its-kind” study that focused on 41 gun-possessing gunshot victims and which suggested that being a criminal with a gun in your car makes it far more likely you’ll get shot?

There’s only one possible verdict:

If you are a 110-pound woman with a night job living alone you should clearly “rethink [your] possession of guns” and “suggestions to the contrary,” purchasing a gun for self-protection ”should be discussed and thoughtfully reconsidered.”

It’s science!

HMMMMM! University of Pennsylvania. Isn't that the same school that employs Dr Michael Mann, of "hockeystick"fame??
Seems to be a real hotbed of useful information. Or at least of "studies".
Wonder if they hang out at the same faculty parties.

Under that same senario...people who own cars are many times more likely to get murdered by a gun, or die of food poisoning than those who don't.

if you carry a gun when burglarising my house i am more likely to shoot you six times than twice.
i think when people carry umbrellas they make it more likely to rain. visual evidence implies this is so.
on a serious note a gun saved me from violence on 3 occassions when traveling. no shots fired. twice it made prowlers run for their lives. again no shots fired.

If you go to McDonalds everyday and eat 3 big mac's your more likely to be fat, what a concept. What next those who take showers are more likely to get wet?

Here is my favorite study, which I did myself about 20 years ago to make fun of a bunch of morons in the statistics department about a study similar to the one in this article (which frauds have been performing on our dime for decades if not centuries).

I went to 20 random locations with a clipboard and binoculars. Every time I observed anyone walk past with an open soda-pop in hand, I recorded whether the soda was "regular" (full of sugar and calories) or "diet" (virtually no sugar or calories) and whether the person was "thin", "medium" or "fat".

92% of those folks I classified as "thin" were drinking "regular soda-pop", and 87% of those folks I classified as "fat" were drinking "diet soda-pop".

This scientifically proves beyond any doubt whatsoever (to liars and morons like that doctor) that "high-calorie, sugar-laden soda-pop makes folks thin" and "no-calorie, no-sugar soda-pop makes folks fat".

What other conclusion could a scientist come to? That fat folks drink low-calorie drinks to attempt to lose weight, while thin folks needn't bother? Nah, that's much to "unscientific"!

I've read the study. Ignoring the fact that they kept out everyone 21 and under (which happens to be part the group most likely to be involved in shootings [17-23]), didn't include people shot in bed or at the office, or people from out of state they also did a sort of cherry picking.

If you look at Table One you will notice that of the people shot with or without guns, most tend to be young black males in poorer areas with prior arrests and in areas with high drug use.

So young black ex-cons in drug pushing areas tend to get shot more often? Say it ain't so Joe! Say it ain't so!

I am quite certain that if you took a study in which you compared the chance of being shot when you are committing felonies and carry a gun or live in such an area and are shot while carrying a gun and compare it to people who don't you would find similar numbers.

The study is skewed to the point where 10's of millions of legal gun owners apparently have not been reporting getting shot, or going to the hospitals for gunshot wounds.

When the authors of the study compare numbers for legal gun owners vs non gun owners they'll find what every other reputable study has found.

dr charlie should have his nut bag nailed to a stump and then tipped over backwards. its douchebags like this that spoil our forefathers whole concept of america!!!!

Did this doofus measure the effect of smart individuals owning guns preventing the scumbags of society from attempting violence? Or did the non-gun-carrying people just turn over their lives to the miscreant holding the gun aimed at their heads? Maybe we need to fund a study of this...

I was wondering where these 110 lb women are? The women I see on a daily basis are all about 230lbs and gaining. Oh! I forgot, my wife is only 108 lbs but, she is a very distinct exception. The average American woman who is single and works at night is at least 230#s or more likely, if you use the Cops program, as an example, 330 lbs.

By the way I always have 1 or 2 handguns on me and sometimes more and am a seriously supportive pro-gun person. I just don't think there are many women in this country of obesity, that weigh 110#s.

Maybe you need to move to a new neighborhood. Preferably one without a 24-hour Cinnabon. ;)

I am 62. Have owned a gun since I was 12, it was a .22 bolt action given on my birthday. Now I own 5 pistols, 2 assault weapons, 3 shotguns and 5 other assorted hunting guns. According to the study I should have been shot at least 15 or 20 times by now but have managed to get by without being shot at once. Not only that but I have never had to shoot anyone either.
The study should say "Guns don't kill people, however, young black gang members and drug dealers do use them to shoot each other".

why even argue with the anti-gun nuts? In the first place they are pathological liars
just like Osama Obama is. It's likly we will
be meeting the "Muslims" on our fromt porch in the near future. Since they are here to kill us, the auto-20 guage sounds like a good choice. stock up on ammo. Let's not have another study, just look at Great Britain, Australia, Germany-pre-WW2.History will tell you plenty.
