because “current heat wave unrelated to larger, more interesting story” would not have made as good a headline.

According to a story in the Washington Post, US and European researchers believe that heat waves like the one we are now experiencing on the East coast are caused by global warming. Well, not actually this particular heat wave, which is being produced by "a large persistent area of high pressure in the upper atmosphere" according to National Weather Service meteorologist Dennis Feltgen.

But like this one. If it had been a result of global warming.

Which it wasn’t

Still, according to Richard Heim, a researcher at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., we haven’t seen such sustained heat levels since the 1930s. "It's just incredible, when you look at this thing," he exclaims. Indeed, the data strongly suggests that fundamental assumptions regarding the level of ownership of Cadillac Escalades in the 1930s has been drastically underestimated since there is no other possible explanation for such unusually warm conditions.

More troubling is research conducted by Joel D. Scheraga, national program director for the U.S. Global Change Research Program of the Environmental Protection Agency, which indicates that heat-related deaths could triple in the next half century as a result of global warming.

Assuming global warming causes heat waves. Which it is not now doing.

In related news, researchers assure worried residents that the deadly cold snap gripping South Africa has nothing to do with a coming ice age.

For now.
