CONSENSUS WATCH - 2/16/2009

An ongoing series dedicated to vigorously monitoring emerging threats to The Consensus that global warming is real, caused by humans, and must be addressed immediately. Because without consensus, scientific conclusions would remain vulnerable to new data.

It is essential to the integrity of the scientific process that it be insulated from the whims and passing fancies of factual observations. We simply can’t allow ourselves to get all caught up in the latest “information,” just because everyone else is.

That is why we salute NASA’s Dr. James Hansen, whose steadfast resolve in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary serves as an important lesson to us all.

Take, for example, this record of the historic relationship between CO2 levels and average global temperatures.

Paleocarbon

You, being merely part of the public, are probably “too buffeted by weather fluctuations and economic turmoil” to impartially analyze this data as a dispassionate scientist would and in so doing reach the obvious conclusion that “Coal-fired power plants are factories of death.”

Also, ““The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains.”

We know this because rather than get bogged down in evidence, real scientists use highly sophisticated models that make projections based on preconceived notions and in so doing, are able to produce conclusions such as, “Climate Change Worse Than Predicted.”

Sure, actual climate change hasn’t been worse than predicted, it’s that predicted climate change is worse than predicted.

Now THAT’S science.

And once you get the hang of it, it’s easy.  Here’s a projection we created based on the assumption that increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 lead to dramatically higher temperatures and concludes that by the end of the next decade, all life on earth will cease to exist.

SUV Drivers Are Murderers

What? Too much?

Regardless, what is really important to remember about The Consensus on anthropogenic global warming and our role in addressing the grave climate crisis facing us all is that Al Gore won a Grammy.

Personally, we’re looking forward to the inevitable production of, “An Inconvenient Truth: On Ice!”

Er, wait, maybe not ice

Inappropriate Don't forget, Consensus Watch gear tells the world that you really need a girlfriend! We have an extensive line of "Stop raping the planet! You may, however, touch it inappropriately," gear (coffee cup, bags, coasters, stickers, buttons), and the classic Consensus Watch coffee mug: "Consensus Watch Because without consensus, scientific conclusions would remain vulnerable to new data."

The thing is, they could be straightforward and say "predicted climate change is worse than predicted" and it wouldn't change the Consensus. But that would take some of the punch out of a well-phrased Planet Moron report.

Wake me when any of the predicted becomes the actual.
